“I only buy what I need and what I can carry on my bike”

Sara explains how biking has given her a unique sense of freedom, with the added benefits of saving time and money, against the backdrop of the pandemic.

During the pandemic I started to use my bike more, for safety reasons, to get my shopping at Leeds Kirkgate Market. I would go early and park up my bike when it’s a little quieter. The really nice thing is I can fill up my panniers (which are the bags that I attach to the side of my bike) with shopping by going from stall to stall – so it’s perfect!

Choosing not to drive also means I shop in a different way. I only buy what I need and what I can carry on my bike. It feels much simpler this way, and I suppose it lends itself to a certain way of living and supporting local businesses as well which feels great!

And of course it’s a good form of exercise, with the added bonus of not paying for parking. It’s also lovely to know that it’s good for the environment too. I’m so pleased I considered and decided to make this small change that has had a big impact on my everyday life.
